Ernie's Cottage

Ernie's Cottage is a 20-bed self-catering bunkhouse that is available for private hire.

It's an ideal venue for an outdoor holiday and is especially suited to groups interested in mountain biking as you can pedal from the front door of the cottage straight on to miles and miles of stunning Welsh forestry tracks and bridle ways. Kayak/Canoe groups are particularly well served too, with the bunkhouse providing an excellent base from which to explore the rivers. Whether you are white water tourers, playboaters or open canoeists, South Wales’ rivers have something for everyone.

The cottage is also a good venue from which to run an Outdoor Pursuit or Environmental programme for small Educational/Youth groups. Other adult groups have used the cottage for a variety of reasons such as family holidays, hen parties or just getting away from it all.

South Wales is one of the most important caving regions of Britain. Several caves for the beginner and expert alike are close to the centre. Gorge walks, combining water and rock activities, as well as educational opportunities are also available at several locations; some on the doorstep, while others are a short drive away.

Hillwalking and climbing within the nearby Brecon Beacons National Park are very accessible and can offer some of the most stunning views & challenges available in the region.

Ernie's is a self-contained single storey, centrally heated cottage offering self-catering accommodation for groups of up to 16 people. The sleeping arrangements consist of two, six-bunk bedrooms and two single rooms. There are two separate shower and toilet areas, a well-equipped kitchen, lounge/dining/classroom area, outdoor equipment and drying room. You need to bring your own sleeping bags, pillows and pillow cases.

The cottage is positioned to the side of Tyr Abad Residential Education Centre and has some privacy from the main centre and activities. It is situated on the edge of the Crychan Forest, 5 miles south of Llanwrtyd Wells and 11 miles north of Llandovery. It is an ideal venue from which to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities.

The area around Tyr Abad has amazing scenery and is situated in one of the most tranquil areas of Britain. This remoteness has helped the rare Red Kite to become re-established as well as allowing other endangered birds of prey to breed. Along the banks of the Afon Mellte rare flora & fauna can be found and spectacular geology is abundant in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The staff at Tyr Abad Outdoor Centre can give advice on suitable venues or can be employed by cottage groups to run an activity, which includes the hire of any specialist equipment but not transport.  For kayak/canoe activities your vehicle will require a tow bar.
